Algeria Boosts Zakat Collection Through Digital Transformation

Algiers, October 22, 2025 – Efforts are underway to further develop Zakat collection mechanisms in Algeria, aligning with the nation’s broader digital transformation strategy. Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Youssef Belmahdi, emphasized the ongoing commitment to modernizing the sector during the opening of the 17th International Conference on the Maliki School of Thought.

The conference, themed “The Zakat System in the Maliki School of Thought: Civilizational and Developmental Dimensions in Light of Contemporary Challenges,” provided a platform to discuss strategies for enhancing the efficiency and transparency of Zakat administration. Minister Belmahdi highlighted the Ministry’s dedication to streamlining Zakat collection and distribution processes through digitalization, promoting good governance and accountability.

“Our aim is to simplify the process of Zakat collection and allocation, reducing administrative burdens and fostering a forward-looking vision for the Zakat institution,” stated Minister Belmahdi. He reiterated the significant impact of the Zakat Fund, noting that over 93,000 individuals benefited from the 23rd campaign for Zakat al-Mal (wealth), crops, fruits, and livestock this year. The total amount collected this year approached 900 million dinars.

Since its establishment in 2003, the Zakat Fund has aided over 5 million eligible recipients, according to the Minister. He emphasized the importance of adapting to evolving methods and technologies, enabling the transition of Zakat from an individual practice to an institutionalized system.

Minister Belmahdi affirmed that the establishment of the Zakat Fund is integral to the state’s efforts to achieve social justice and economic solidarity. He lauded the role of mosques in encouraging collective and organized Zakat contributions, as well as their participation in committees responsible for identifying beneficiaries and distributing funds.
