DZWatch Exclusive: The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is reportedly preparing a substantial incentive package for national team coach Vladimir Petkovic should he lead “Les Fennecs” to victory in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Sources within the FAF indicate that president Walid Sadi is highly motivated to secure Algeria’s success on the continental stage.
Petkovic, who assumed his role on March 4, 2024, currently has a contract that automatically extends to the next World Cup finals, contingent upon Algeria’s qualification. However, should he deliver the African title, Petkovic could become the highest-paid coach in the history of Algerian football.
The FAF’s financial department is allegedly preparing a long-term contract offer that includes a doubling of his current salary, alongside unprecedented sporting and administrative benefits for the national team’s coaching staff. This demonstrates the Federation’s commitment to rewarding success and ensuring stability within the national team setup.
DZWatch understands that the FAF has strategically shielded itself from significant financial losses should Algeria fail to achieve success in the Africa Cup of Nations. The current contract is structured to conclude automatically before July, allowing Sadi to reassess the technical project without incurring substantial financial penalties. This approach reflects lessons learned from the previous, and ultimately complex, relationship with former coach Djamel Belmadi.
Negotiations with Petkovic are planned to commence after the conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations. This decision aims to avoid any distractions or pressures and prevent a repeat of the “Belmadi scenario,” where disagreements over his departure led to a period of instability within the national team. The FAF is prioritizing stability, and a strong performance in the Africa Cup of Nations is crucial for Petkovic to compensate for Algeria’s disappointing performances in the previous two tournaments.
Furthermore, discussions are underway regarding the potential organization of a friendly tournament in March, under FIFA’s supervision. Following the success of a similar tournament last March, which allowed Algeria to test new players and solidify the squad, the FAF views this as a valuable opportunity to prepare for future competitions. Sadi is reportedly determined to create a tournament that aligns with the national team’s ambitions ahead of major events.
