Jakarta, Indonesia – Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization and one of the most influential religious institutions globally, has reportedly demanded the resignation of its chairman, Yahya Cholil Staquf. The demand stems from his invitation to an American scholar known for his pro-Israel views to participate in an internal training program held in August.
According to reports, the NU leadership convened last Thursday and granted Staquf a three-day ultimatum to voluntarily step down. Failure to comply would result in his removal from office. The organization cited two primary reasons for its decision: hosting an individual “linked to a global Zionist network” at an internal event and allegations of financial mismanagement.
NU boasts an estimated 100 million members and supporters, making it a significant voice within the Islamic world. Staquf, however, has reportedly refused to resign. Local media quoted him stating on Sunday that he was elected to a five-year term and that the convening body lacked the authority to dismiss him.
The controversy centers around Staquf’s invitation to former U.S. official and scholar Peter Berkowitz to participate in the training program. Staquf previously apologized for the invitation, citing a “negligence in verifying the guest’s background.” He also affirmed his condemnation of the “brutal crimes committed by Israel in Gaza.”
Berkowitz is known for his writings defending Israel’s actions in Gaza, including an article published in September rejecting accusations of genocide. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, has consistently condemned Israel’s operations in Gaza and advocates for a two-state solution. Indonesia does not maintain diplomatic relations with Israel.
