Intense fighting is reported in several areas of North and West Kordofan states in Sudan, as the ongoing conflict continues to displace civilians and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis. The Sudanese army is reportedly engaged in battles with rival forces in key locations, while international organizations are urgently calling for increased resources to address the needs of the displaced population.
Reports indicate heavy clashes west of Al-Ubayyid, the capital of North Kordofan, and in Babnusa, a major city in West Kordofan. Military sources suggest that artillery fire has been exchanged in Babnusa. There are also reports of troop advancements in the Um Sumaima axis of North Kordofan and west of the town of al-Khawi in West Kordofan.
Um Sumaima is a strategically important area located approximately 50 kilometers west of Al-Ubayyid, connecting North and West Kordofan. The fighting in the Kordofan region has intensified since the capture of El Fasher in the Darfur region last month.
The humanitarian situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate due to the conflict, which began in April 2023. The violence has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of an estimated 13 million people. The White Nile State has received a significant influx of newly displaced individuals from North Kordofan and the Darfur region, bringing the total number of displaced persons in the state to over two million.
A representative from UNICEF in Sudan has warned that available resources are insufficient to meet the needs of children fleeing the conflict. Many children have reportedly witnessed violence against their families and relatives. The lack of adequate support for those fleeing El Fasher, the epicenter of the crisis, is a major concern. The international community is urged to increase aid to address the growing humanitarian needs in Sudan.
