New US Peace Plan for Ukraine Emerges Amidst Controversy

Geneva, Switzerland – A new draft of the American peace plan aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine has been revealed, with Ukrainian officials indicating it addresses several of their key priorities. Rustem Umerov, a lead Ukrainian negotiator, confirmed the existence of the revised plan following negotiation rounds in Geneva. He expressed hope for further progress, noting the document is still undergoing final review.

The 28-point peace plan is the subject of intense discussions among Ukrainian, American, and European officials currently meeting in Switzerland. Washington describes the proposal as a framework for negotiations, not a final offer. However, concerns remain in Kyiv and within the European Union that the plan could lead to undue pressure on Ukraine to concede territory.

According to Umerov, progress has been made in discussions with the American side. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also suggested that the talks were advancing compared to previous sessions. European leaders attending a separate summit in Luanda, Angola, are also slated to discuss the plan. French President Emmanuel Macron has called for establishing deterrents to prevent any future Russian aggression against its neighbor.

Concerns within Europe have surfaced regarding specific details of the American plan. Reports indicate that some European officials fear the proposal, which reportedly cedes the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of eastern Ukraine to Russia in exchange for Russia’s reinstatement into the G8, could undermine their efforts to support Ukraine.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that Ukraine should have the freedom and sovereign right to choose its own destiny, stating, “It has chosen a European future.” She stressed the crucial need for full recognition of the European Union’s central role in any plan aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
