Severe Weather Alert: Heavy Rain and Snow Forecast Across Algeria

DZWatch News is issuing a severe weather alert for much of Algeria, with a significant weather system expected to impact the country starting Monday night and continuing through the end of November. The approaching disturbance is predicted to bring heavy thunderstorms, significant snowfall, and a continuation of the already frigid temperatures affecting various regions.

According to meteorological models, the eastern, central, and western regions of Algeria are most likely to experience intense thunderstorms during this period. Snowfall and ice formation are particularly anticipated in the High Plateaus and the Aurès Mountains. This weather pattern is attributed to a surge of exceptionally cold air originating from Europe moving southward towards North Africa, leading to a noticeable drop in temperatures.

Beginning Tuesday, the northern regions, especially coastal areas, are forecast to receive heavy thunderstorms with rainfall amounts potentially reaching between 40 and 50 millimeters locally. The provinces expected to be affected include Oran, Sidi Bel Abbès, Saïda, Mechria, Naâma, El Bayadh, Relizane, Chlef, Aïn Témouchent, Mostaganem, Algiers, Blida, Boumerdès, Tipaza, Tizi Ouzou, Béjaïa, Jijel, Skikda, Annaba, El Tarf, Souk Ahras, and Constantine.

Snowfall is expected to return to the central and eastern highlands above 1400 meters on Monday night into Tuesday. By Wednesday, the snow level is predicted to descend to between 1000 and 1200 meters, potentially impacting numerous provinces with significant snowfall. Furthermore, some rainfall is anticipated in the southern provinces of Ouargla, Touggourt, El M’Ghair, Ghardaïa, and El Meniaa on Wednesday, as the weather system extends inland towards the Sahara region.

Temperatures are forecast to plummet to record lows during the mornings and evenings, potentially reaching between -3 and -4 degrees Celsius in the provinces of Naâma, El Bayadh, Mechria, Constantine, Oum El Bouaghi, Tébessa, Khenchela, Djelfa, and Tiaret. Coastal areas are not expected to exceed 4 degrees Celsius, intensifying the feeling of extreme cold.

The sea conditions are expected to be rough to very rough along most of the central and eastern coasts, with moderate visibility and wave heights potentially reaching up to 3 meters. Mariners and coastal users are urged to exercise extreme caution. DZWatch News will continue to monitor this developing weather situation and provide updates as they become available.
