Algeria Launches Ambitious National Tree Planting Campaign

Algiers, October 25, 2025 – A nationwide initiative to plant one million saplings commenced this morning, witnessing widespread participation from volunteer groups across the country. The campaign, spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Forests, is unfolding across all 58 provinces of Algeria.

The ambitious undertaking aims to significantly enhance the nation’s vegetation cover and combat the adverse effects of climate change. Organizers are confident in achieving the target of planting one million trees within a single day, making it the largest national tree planting campaign in the country’s history.

This large-scale afforestation project is being implemented in partnership with the ‘Green Algeria Association.’ Careful consideration is being given to the specific ecological needs of each region, ensuring that the selected plant species are well-suited to the local climatic conditions of each province.

Beyond increasing the forested areas, the campaign is also designed to prevent soil erosion and desertification. Furthermore, it aims to cultivate a culture of tree planting and promote a spirit of civic engagement among Algerian citizens.

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, Yassine Mehdi Walid, emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating that it is more than just a tree planting exercise. “This is a national commitment towards a more sustainable future for our country,” he declared. The project represents a significant step towards a greener and more environmentally resilient Algeria.
