DOHA, Qatar – Algerian researcher Laid Dardabou has been crowned the winner of the 17th season of the renowned pan-Arab innovation competition, ‘Stars of Science’. Dardabou emerged victorious after a rigorous final round, competing against Razan Salem Bahabri from Saudi Arabia and Mohammad Al-Sheikh Saleh from Jordan.
Dardabou, who holds a PhD in Animal Physiology and Nutrition from the University of Vienna, impressed the judges with his invention: a smart watch designed to monitor vital signs and detect levels of Vitamin D and serotonin. This innovative device aims to facilitate the early detection of depression and anxiety disorders.
The Algerian innovator revealed that his invention was inspired by a personal experience, driving him to contribute to redefining mental health monitoring methods worldwide.
“I started this project based on a promise I made to myself, after witnessing a relative suffer from undiagnosed depression caused by Vitamin D deficiency,” Dardabou stated. “I wanted to ensure that others would not have to go through this painful experience, and ‘Stars of Science’ provided me with all the means and tools necessary to transform this promise into a real innovation.”
After weeks of intense work, research, and testing, Laid Dardabou secured the title of Season 17 champion, marking a significant achievement for Algerian innovation on the regional stage. His win highlights the potential for technological solutions to address pressing health challenges and underscores the importance of personal experiences in driving impactful innovation.
