Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo – Algeria has been elected to a prominent position within the African Parliamentary Union (APU), securing a seat on the Executive Committee as Vice-President for the North Africa region. The election took place during the 47th Conference of Speakers of National Parliaments of the APU, held in Kinshasa on Saturday.
This selection follows two days of intensive discussions focusing on critical political and economic issues impacting the future of the African continent, with a strong emphasis on strengthening collaborative parliamentary efforts. Algeria’s election is a significant recognition of its central role in fostering African parliamentary cooperation and advocating for shared interests within regional bodies.
The final day of the conference saw the adoption of reports from both the Political and Economic Committees. The Political Committee’s report, titled ‘Strengthening National Sovereignty of African States for Sustainable Development,’ was formally approved. Similarly, the Economic Committee presented and gained approval for its report, ‘Challenges of Energy Transition and Development of Renewable Energies in Africa.’
Both reports contained a series of recommendations aimed at bolstering political stability and promoting sound economic governance across African nations. The APU’s focus on these key areas highlights the organization’s commitment to addressing the multifaceted challenges facing the continent.
This new role positions Algeria to play an even more influential part in shaping the APU’s agenda and contributing to the advancement of parliamentary diplomacy across Africa. It also underscores Algeria’s dedication to promoting sustainable development and regional cooperation within the continent. The Algerian delegation expressed its commitment to working closely with other member states to achieve the APU’s shared goals. This election marks a significant step forward for Algeria’s diplomatic efforts in Africa.
