Sahrawi Diplomat: AU-EU Summit Participation Rebuffs Moroccan Claims

Luanda, Angola – The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic’s (SADR) participation in the 7th African Union-European Union Summit in Luanda is a direct response to Morocco’s propaganda and attempts to bury the Sahrawi cause, according to Hamdi Khalil Mayara, the Sahrawi Ambassador to Angola and Namibia. Mayara made the statement on Sunday, emphasizing the significance of the SADR’s presence at the summit.

President of the SADR, Brahim Ghali, is attending the summit, which is being held on November 24th and 25th under the theme “Fostering Peace and Prosperity through Effective Multilateralism.”

Permanent representatives of the African Union and the European Union convened in Luanda on Sunday to prepare and approve documents to be presented at the summit, which begins on Monday.

In a statement, Ambassador Mayara asserted that the SADR’s participation underscores its existence as a founding member of the African Union. He noted that President Ghali also attended the previous summit in Brussels last year.

The Sahrawi diplomat stressed the crucial importance of the SADR’s participation in this edition of the summit, especially amidst Morocco’s intensified propaganda and dissemination of misinformation following the UN Security Council Resolution 2703, which reaffirms the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.

According to Mayara, the SADR’s presence is a “response from Africa to Morocco, which deceives its people by promoting the false claim of its alleged sovereignty over Western Sahara and that the issue is definitively closed.” He further highlighted the Moroccan media’s recent attacks on the African Union due to President Ghali’s participation in this important international forum.

The Sahrawi official described the participation as a “diplomatic victory” that comes at a crucial time, representing a “highly significant” step in the negotiation process towards organizing a referendum on self-determination and ultimately achieving the SADR’s full sovereignty over all its occupied territories.
