Agriculture Minister Addresses Grain Sector Concerns, Pledges Farmer Support

Algiers – The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Yacine Oualid, presided over a national meeting dedicated to discussing the state of the grain sector and exploring avenues for its development. The meeting, held Saturday evening, brought together representatives from various regions of the country, the head of the National Chamber of Agriculture, and the Secretary-General of the National Union of Algerian Farmers. This gathering underscores the commitment to fostering dialogue with key stakeholders and identifying effective strategies to bolster this strategically important sector.

The discussions centered on the challenges hindering grain production. Participants emphasized the urgent need to revise the input support system, particularly concerning fertilizers and seeds, to align with current demands. Furthermore, calls were made for the development of new insurance schemes to protect farmers against drought and natural disasters that threaten agricultural yields.

The issue of water scarcity in drought-affected regions was also addressed, with participants advocating for the construction of water barriers and the more efficient utilization of rainwater and treated wastewater. Emphasis was placed on improving the technical aspects of grain cultivation, involving technical institutes to provide tailored scientific and practical support suited to the specific characteristics of each region.

Financial challenges faced by farmers were also a key topic. Representatives stressed the need to find solutions for debt accumulated due to years of drought and to revise the procedures for seasonal loans. Proposals included the creation of micro-loans for farmers and ensuring the timely availability of modern agricultural equipment and spare parts to minimize losses and enhance productivity. Simplification of administrative procedures and the provision of climate-appropriate seeds were also highlighted as crucial.

Minister Oualid assured attendees that some concerns would be addressed immediately, while other matters would be resolved as quickly as possible. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting grain producers and assisting them in overcoming challenges and improving performance, ultimately strengthening national food security and ensuring the sustainability of this vital sector.
