Algiers, October 25, 2025 – A nationwide tree-planting campaign, dubbed the “Million Tree Campaign,” has ignited an unprecedented wave of public participation across Algeria. Launched today, the initiative aims to plant one million trees across the country under the slogan “Green, God Willing.”
Spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, through the General Directorate of Forests, in collaboration with the “Green Algeria” association and its founder Fouad Maala, the campaign coincides with the National Tree Day.
A statement from the Ministry of Agriculture indicated that the planting operation is ongoing, with the goal of achieving the million-tree target. Preliminary statistics suggest that the number of trees planted may significantly exceed this goal, thanks to the overwhelming public response.
The campaign has garnered support from a wide range of participants, including public and private institutions, associations, educational bodies, and individual citizens and families. This widespread involvement underscores the Algerian society’s awareness of the importance of protecting forests and green spaces as a shared responsibility.
The official launch of the campaign took place in the municipality of Ait Aaggouacha, in the Tizi Ouzou province, with the aim of revitalizing areas affected by wildfires during the summer of 2021. In preparation for the campaign, the General Directorate of Forests prepared one million seedlings suitable for the specific characteristics of each region, including 130,000 fruit trees.
The Minister of Agriculture is scheduled to visit four provinces – Tizi Ouzou, Bouira, Bordj Bou Arreridj, and Algiers – to officially launch the campaign in those regions. The Million Tree Campaign represents a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable Algeria.
