Flooding Displaces Thousands Across Malaysia

More than 11,000 people have been affected by severe flooding across seven states in Malaysia, according to the National Disaster Management Agency. Heavy rainfall has caused widespread displacement, forcing families from their homes.

A recent report from the agency indicates that 11,000 individuals, representing 3,839 families, have been impacted by the floods. The affected states include Kedah, Kelantan, Penang, Perak, Perlis, Terengganu, and Selangor.

The northeastern state of Kelantan, bordering Thailand, has been the hardest hit. The agency reported 8,228 residents displaced from their homes in Kelantan. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported as of yet.

To accommodate those displaced, 60 temporary shelters have been established across the affected states. These shelters provide refuge and essential resources for the flood victims.

Flooding is a recurring issue on Malaysia’s east coast during the annual monsoon season, which typically lasts from October to March. Every year, thousands are displaced due to the heavy rains and subsequent flooding.

The Meteorological Department has issued warnings for continued heavy rainfall and strong winds, suggesting the situation may worsen before it improves. Residents in vulnerable areas are urged to take precautions and heed official advisories.

Malaysia experienced unprecedented flooding in December 2014, which impacted several western states. That event displaced approximately 400,000 people, leaving many without homes and possessions. The current situation serves as a stark reminder of the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. Authorities are working to provide aid and support to those affected by the ongoing floods. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
