Johannesburg – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan asserted on Sunday that genuine global peace remains unattainable without the establishment of a free and independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Speaking on the sidelines of the G20 summit in South Africa, President Erdogan reiterated Turkey’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause. He emphasized that a just and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not merely a regional concern but a fundamental prerequisite for overall global stability.
“The international community must recognize that lasting peace cannot be achieved while the Palestinian people continue to be denied their fundamental rights, including the right to self-determination and a sovereign state,” President Erdogan stated. He further called upon world leaders to actively engage in efforts to revive the peace process and ensure the implementation of relevant UN resolutions.
The Turkish President’s remarks come at a time of heightened tensions in the region, with ongoing clashes and a stalled peace process. Turkey has consistently advocated for a two-state solution as the only viable path to resolving the conflict, urging both sides to return to negotiations in good faith.
Erdogan also highlighted the importance of protecting the historical and religious character of Jerusalem, emphasizing the need to respect the rights of all faiths. He warned against any unilateral actions that could further undermine the prospects for peace and exacerbate tensions.
Turkey’s commitment to the Palestinian cause remains a cornerstone of its foreign policy, and President Erdogan’s statement underscores the country’s continued efforts to promote a just and lasting resolution to the conflict.
