Setif, Algeria – The National Gendarmerie’s Research and Investigation Unit in Setif has seized substantial quantities of animal feed intended for speculative purposes. This operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat illicit practices related to widely consumed and state-subsidized goods.
The operation was launched following intelligence indicating that an individual was operating a clandestine workshop in Ain El Hadjar municipality. The individual was allegedly manufacturing animal feed by mixing subsidized materials intended for human consumption. The purpose was to create feed with components designed to fatten livestock and generate illegal profits.
After completing the necessary legal procedures, the Gendarmerie raided the secret warehouses. The operation resulted in the seizure of over 100 tons of bran, 15 tons of durum wheat, 7 tons of couscous, 5 tons of premium semolina, and 5 tons of flour. Additionally, 600 kilograms of barley were confiscated. Authorities also seized three machines used in the manufacturing and packaging of animal feed. The total value of the seized goods is estimated at 10 million Algerian dinars.
The investigation revealed that the activity was not licensed by the trade authorities. The suspect allegedly aimed to monopolize the animal feed market, creating artificial scarcity to inflate prices. This would ultimately increase the costs of raising cattle and livestock for farmers.
Following the completion of legal procedures, the suspect has been presented before the judicial authorities. Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the full extent of the operation and identify any accomplices involved. DZWatch will continue to monitor this developing story.
