Jon Fosse: A Renowned Norwegian Author with a Global Literary Impact

Born on September 29, 1959, in Haugesund, Norway, the author made his debut in 1983 with his novel “Red, Black.” His distinctive style, characterized by frequent shifts in time and alternating points of view, would become his trademark. His novel “The Boat Shed” (1989) earned him critical acclaim.

Translated into over fifty languages
He emerged as a playwright on the European stage with his play “Someone is Going to Come” (Quelqu’un va venir), directed by Claude Régy in Paris in 1999. In 2021, he returned to the genre with the play “Strong Wind” (Sterk Vind). His latest series of novels, the “Septology,” consisting of seven chapters spread across three volumes released between 2019 and 2021, explores the encounter of a man with another version of himself, raising existential questions.

“I am deeply moved and grateful. I consider this to be a reward for literature that aims to be literature, without any other consideration,” Jon Fosse reacted after the announcement of the award. According to his Norwegian publishing house Samlaget, his texts have been translated into over fifty languages, and his plays have been produced more than a thousand times worldwide.
