Algeria Eyes Clean Hydrogen as Strategic Energy Transition Choice

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Algeria is strategically positioning itself to become a major player in the clean hydrogen sector, viewing it as a cornerstone of its energy transition. Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, emphasized this commitment during an international session titled “Unlocking the Potential of Clean Hydrogen through Investment and Innovation,” held on the sidelines of the 21st General Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Riyadh.

Minister Arkab highlighted Algeria’s pride in participating in the international forum, noting the rapid transformations occurring within the global energy landscape. He lauded the initiative undertaken by UNIDO and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), emphasizing that Algeria’s selection as a partner reflects the international community’s confidence in its future capabilities in the field of clean hydrogen.

The Minister stated that Algeria has adopted a strategic approach, centering clean hydrogen within its energy transition plans. He considers the development of this industrial sector as a pillar for sustainable growth and economic diversification. He also recalled the adoption of the National Hydrogen Strategy in 2023, which includes a practical roadmap encompassing the completion of the regulatory framework, the launch of pilot projects, and the development of an integrated industry to support export capabilities.

Arkab pointed out Algeria’s competitive advantages, particularly its abundant solar resources, positioning it to produce renewable hydrogen at low cost and on a large scale. He revealed significant steps taken, such as incorporating hydrogen specializations in universities, launching international cooperation projects, and introducing tax and customs incentives in the 2026 Finance Law to benefit the sector.

The Minister elaborated on the South H2 Corridor project, which will connect Algeria to Europe for the transport of green hydrogen, confirming that it enjoys direct support from the European Union and technical support from UNIDO, which oversees the project’s technical secretariat. He also highlighted the importance of the national project, part of the UNIDO’s global clean hydrogen program, aimed at developing the regulatory and standardization framework, strengthening technical and human capacities, and preparing industrial infrastructure for local hydrogen production and use. This project, he affirmed, will contribute to diversifying Algerian industry and creating new value chains.

The Minister concluded by underscoring Algeria’s commitment to fostering a robust and sustainable clean hydrogen economy.
