Algeria

Import of Under 3-Year-Old Cars Exclusive to Individuals

Algiers – The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, in conjunction with the General Directorate of Customs, affirmed today that the import of passenger vehicles less than three years old remains exclusively reserved for resident citizens. This clarification came in a joint statement released earlier today.

The statement emphasized that this import privilege is granted to individual citizens once every three years. This regulation explicitly excludes companies, regardless of their business activity or legal structure. The measure aims to regulate the automotive market and ensure fair access to vehicle imports for private individuals.

The joint statement from the Ministry and the Customs authority serves as a reminder of the existing regulations and aims to prevent any misinterpretations or attempts to circumvent the established rules. Authorities are expected to strictly enforce these regulations at all ports of entry.

This decision is expected to have a significant impact on the used car market in Algeria, potentially influencing prices and availability. The government hopes that by limiting imports to individuals, it can better control the flow of foreign currency and support the local automotive industry. The General Directorate of Customs and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion have pledged to continue monitoring the situation and making necessary adjustments to ensure the effectiveness of these measures.

The measure has been in place for some time, but this announcement comes as a reiteration of existing policy. DZWatch will continue to monitor this developing situation and provide updates as they become available.
