African Union Calls for Balanced Trade with Europe

The African Union (AU) has called for more equitable trade partnerships between Africa and Europe. Speaking at the opening of the 7th AU-EU Summit, AU Commission Chairperson Mahamat Ali Youssouf emphasized the need for a shift in trade dynamics between the two continents.

Chairman Youssouf stated that Africa is poised to become a significant driver of global growth and is making strides towards becoming a key player in the global value chain. He asserted that Africa’s role as a mere supplier of raw materials is nearing its end, advocating for balanced trade agreements that reflect the continent’s evolving economic landscape.

The AU Commission Chairperson specifically urged European investment in the processing of mineral resources within Africa, adding it is vital to diminish trade barriers. He called for the removal of both tariff and non-tariff barriers that impede African products’ access to European markets. This, he argued, would foster a more mutually beneficial trade relationship.

Furthermore, Chairman Youssouf emphasized the importance of establishing a stronger and more sustainable multilateral system founded on equality and respect for all nations. He stressed the need to bolster shared vital interests on a global scale. The summit aims to address shared visions for peace, progress, and prosperity for the people of both continents.

The two-day summit, themed “Reinforcing Peace and Development through Effective Multilateralism,” will address priority issues including peace and security, development, migration, and governance. Participants will also assess the existing Africa-Europe partnership across various sectors.

The AU’s call for balanced trade reflects a growing desire among African nations to leverage their resources and potential for greater economic empowerment on the global stage. The summit presents an opportunity to reshape the Africa-Europe relationship toward a more equitable and sustainable future.
