Moscow Awaits Official Ukraine Peace Plan, Sees Trump Proposal as Key

Moscow has not yet formally received the proposed peace plan for Ukraine reportedly crafted by former US President Donald Trump, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Speaking at a press conference alongside Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov, Lavrov stated that Russia is prepared to discuss specific proposals for resolving the ongoing conflict.

Lavrov indicated that the core tenets of the Trump plan are believed to be based on understandings reached in Anchorage. Moscow anticipates receiving an official version of the plan from the United States, ideally after Washington has consulted with European partners and Ukraine. Russia considers the current version to be preliminary.

While not demanding immediate action, Lavrov emphasized that Russia expects the United States to firmly defend the positions agreed upon in Anchorage regarding a settlement in Ukraine. “Russia would not be satisfied if the letter and spirit of the agreements reached by the Russian and American presidents during their meeting in Alaska were erased from the peace plan,” he stated.

Lavrov praised the United States’ engagement on Ukraine, calling it “the only Western country taking the initiative in seeking a resolution to the conflict.” He dismissed the possibility of mediation by France and Germany, saying they “had the opportunity but squandered it.” He suggested Belarus and Turkey could potentially play a mediating role.

Furthermore, Lavrov noted that Russia has yet to receive a response from Ukraine regarding the creation of three working groups and a proposal to elevate the level of representation in negotiations between the two countries.

Echoing Lavrov’s sentiments, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that “at the moment, the only substantive option is the American project, the Trump project. We believe that this could be a very good basis for negotiations, and our president has also spoken about this, and we still adhere to this view.” Peskov indicated that Russia awaits the United States to share its settlement plans through official channels. “We are waiting for the American side to share [their plans],” he said.
