Heavy Snowfall Blankets Several Algerian Provinces

Algiers, Algeria – Several provinces across Algeria are bracing for heavy snowfall, with the National Meteorological Office issuing a series of special weather alerts. Significant snowfall accumulations are expected in mountainous regions, with some areas potentially seeing up to 20 centimeters of snow.

The first weather alert focuses on the eastern provinces of Constantine, Guelma, Skikda, Souk Ahras, Oum El Bouaghi, Batna, and Khenchela. These regions are expected to experience heavy snowfall, potentially reaching 10 centimeters in depth, particularly in areas above 1000 meters in altitude. This period of inclement weather is forecast to begin at 9:00 PM today and continue until 11:00 PM on Thursday.

A second, more severe weather alert has been issued for the provinces of Tizi Ouzou, Bouira, Bejaia, Jijel, Setif, Bordj Bou Arreridj, and Mila. These areas are predicted to receive up to 20 centimeters of snow in mountainous areas exceeding 1000 meters in altitude. This heavier snowfall is expected to commence from midday on Wednesday and persist until 11:00 PM on Thursday.

Furthermore, a third weather advisory indicates that the provinces of Blida, Medea, Tissemsilt, and Ain Defla will also experience snowfall. Accumulations of up to 10 centimeters are anticipated in areas above 1100 meters, starting from 3:00 PM on Wednesday and lasting until 6:00 AM on Thursday.

Authorities are urging caution, particularly for those traveling in mountainous areas. Drivers are advised to be aware of potential road hazards due to slippery conditions and reduced visibility, especially during nighttime and early morning hours. Motorists should exercise extreme care and consider delaying travel if possible.
