The U.S. military is prepared to execute any decisions made by the political leadership regarding Venezuela, a Pentagon official told DZWatch News on Tuesday. This statement comes amid ongoing tensions between the United States and the South American nation.
While emphasizing readiness, the official also noted that President Trump has expressed openness to dialogue with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. This suggests a complex approach, balancing potential military action with diplomatic engagement.
Adding to the regional focus, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is scheduled to visit the Dominican Republic on Wednesday. According to a Pentagon spokesperson, Hegseth will meet with the Dominican President and Minister of Defense to reaffirm the U.S. commitment to protecting regional partners and ensuring stability and security in the Americas.
The visit underscores the continued pressure the Trump administration is applying to the Venezuelan leadership. Since August, Washington has amassed significant military assets in the Caribbean region, including a large aircraft carrier and a fleet of warships. The stated purpose of this build-up is to combat drug trafficking into the United States.
President Trump has sent mixed signals regarding potential strikes within Venezuelan territory. He has reportedly authorized covert operations by the CIA in Venezuela and has stated that he does not rule out military intervention. However, he has also indicated a willingness to speak with President Maduro.
The U.S. administration accuses Maduro of leading drug trafficking operations, allegations he denies. Maduro maintains that the United States is fabricating a pretext for aggression against his country. Tensions remain high as the U.S. continues to monitor the situation in Venezuela and the surrounding region.
Since September, there have been numerous reported incidents involving U.S. forces in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, with at least 83 people killed in 21 attacks against vessels allegedly involved in drug smuggling.
