A high-ranking Russian official has stated that Moscow will only halt its military operations in Ukraine once its objectives are achieved. Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the State Duma, conveyed this message, emphasizing Russia’s unwavering stance.
In an interview, Slutsky asserted that while the United States is purportedly working constructively towards a cessation of hostilities, significant hurdles remain. He indicated that Ukrainian authorities are resistant to key provisions proposed by Washington, thus hindering progress towards a negotiated settlement.
Slutsky characterized the current document as preliminary, subject to further discussion and revision before direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine can commence. He stressed that Russia will not compromise on core issues previously outlined by President Vladimir Putin. These include Ukraine abandoning its current constitution, which he described using strong terms, demilitarizing its armed forces, and relinquishing its aspirations to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
“We will not concede on our objectives,” Slutsky declared. He warned that if Ukraine fails to adopt a constructive approach that addresses Russia’s aims, the conflict will persist, despite Moscow’s alleged willingness to negotiate. He maintained that the time for a peaceful resolution is now.
However, Slutsky emphasized that a diplomatic solution necessitates a more positive stance from Kyiv, particularly regarding territorial issues, even though he acknowledges they have responded to the pressures from the US. He declined to disclose specific details of the US proposal, citing its confidential nature, but expressed hope that Washington can facilitate a resolution based on “rationality.”
Slutsky added that while Russia is relying on Washington, the future is still unclear. He did not elaborate on what would happen if Washington failed to deliver on its promises.
