Algeria has mourned the loss of renowned actress Baya Bouzar, known affectionately as Biyouna, in a solemn and moving funeral procession. The event served as a national tribute to a beloved artist who brought joy to Algerian audiences for decades.
The funeral, held on November 26, 2025, was attended by high-ranking state officials and a large public gathering, reflecting the significance of Biyouna’s contribution to Algerian culture. The procession commenced at the Mahieddine Bachtarzi National Theater, where mourners paid their final respects to the actress’s remains. A profound silence filled the air as attendees honored her exceptional artistic journey. The procession then made its way to the El Alia Cemetery, where she was laid to rest.
Among the dignitaries present were Kamel Sidi Said, Advisor to the President for Media and Communication, Malika Bendouda, Minister of Culture and Arts, and Mohamed Hamidat, the Delegate Wali of the Bab El Oued administrative district. Their presence underscored the state’s recognition of Biyouna’s immense impact on Algerian arts and culture.
Numerous artists who collaborated with Biyouna throughout her career also attended, including Hassan Ben Zerari, Abdelhamid Rabia, Hassan Kechache, and Sidi Ali Ben Salem, alongside media personalities such as Amer Bahloul, the producer of ‘Alhan wa Chabab,’ and the artist Moustapha Ayad, son of the legendary Rouiched. A vast crowd of admirers joined to bid farewell to the celebrated artist.
Biyouna’s funeral was more than just a burial; it was a collective acknowledgment of an artist who filled Algerian screens with laughter and created timeless works in television, cinema, and theater. Throughout her career, she remained a symbol of authentic Algerian art.
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune sent a message of condolence, reflecting the nationwide grief. The Minister of Culture and Arts, Malika Bendouda, also issued a statement, emphasizing the special place Biyouna held in the Algerian artistic landscape.
