Algeria Elected to Executive Council of Chemical Weapons Watchdog

ALGIERS – Algeria has been unanimously elected to the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), representing the African Group. The election took place on Tuesday evening during the 30th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The Algerian Embassy in the Netherlands stated that this renewal of Algeria’s membership, achieved through unanimous endorsement, "constitutes a confirmation of the international community’s confidence in the constructive role and active contribution that Algeria plays within the organization to achieve the objectives of the Convention aimed at building a world free from the threat posed by chemical weapons."

Algeria’s continued presence on the Executive Council underscores its commitment to international efforts in preventing the proliferation and use of chemical weapons. The Executive Council is the OPCW’s governing body and is responsible for supervising the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention and ensuring its effective operation.

The OPCW, based in The Hague, Netherlands, is the implementing body for the Chemical Weapons Convention, which prohibits the development, production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons. With 193 member states, the OPCW is dedicated to achieving a world free of chemical weapons.

Algeria’s election reflects its ongoing dedication to global security and its proactive engagement in multilateral disarmament efforts. The country is expected to continue playing a significant role in promoting the OPCW’s mission and upholding the principles of the Chemical Weapons Convention during its term on the Executive Council.
