Algiers – Algeria has emerged as the leading steel producer in North Africa, experiencing significant growth in its steel industry throughout 2025. The nation has recorded a remarkable 15% surge in crude steel production within a short period, positioning it as a key player in this vital sector.
Reports indicate that Algeria spearheaded North Africa’s performance in steel production. Output reached 460,000 tons in a single month, demonstrating that factories are operating at full capacity.
This surge comes as Algeria seeks to expand its influence in a sector that forms a cornerstone of global construction and manufacturing. While other nations maintain their leading positions within the Arab world, Algeria’s rapid growth signals a shift in the regional landscape.
The overall Arab steel sector has also witnessed growth, increasing by 7.2% in the first ten months of 2025. This growth reflects the increasing contribution of Arab nations to the international iron and steel market.
Looking ahead, Algeria is preparing to exploit the massive Gara Djebilet iron ore mine, a project expected to transform the national industry starting in the first quarter of 2026. This development promises to further solidify Algeria’s position as a major force in the steel industry, both regionally and potentially globally.
