In a significant legal development, a U.S. judge has dismissed all 39 charges against former President Donald Trump and his allies related to alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in the state of Georgia.
Government documents revealed Wednesday that Attorney General Peter Skandalakis requested the dismissal of the charges, stating that pursuing the case would be “unproductive.” Skandalakis, who assumed office earlier this month following the removal of the Fulton County District Attorney last year, acknowledged the controversial nature of the decision.
“I recognize that in light of the deep political divisions that plague our country, this decision will not be universally accepted,” Skandalakis wrote.
Trump’s legal team has lauded the decision. Steve Sadow, Trump’s attorney, welcomed the dismissal, asserting that the case should never have been brought forward in the first place.
The Georgia case was one of four criminal lawsuits Trump faced in the years following his 2020 presidential election loss to Democrat Joe Biden. Only one case has proceeded to trial: a New York case concerning hush money payments made to an adult film actress during his 2016 campaign. Trump was convicted in that case but has requested its dismissal.
This is a developing story.
