Algiers, Algeria – A scholarly forum dedicated to strengthening the national system for drug prevention commenced today at the cultural center of Djamaa El Djazair. The event, themed “Creating an Integrated National System for the Prevention of Drugs and Psychotropic Substances… Prevention Ensures Protection,” is jointly organized by the National Office for Combating Drugs and Addiction and the Center for Legal and Judicial Research, affiliated with the Ministry of Justice.
This initiative aims to highlight preventative and therapeutic measures, as well as present the new substantive and procedural provisions introduced by Law 23-05, which amends and supplements Law 04-18 concerning the prevention of drugs and psychotropic substances and combating their illicit use and trafficking. The forum also seeks to shed light on the legal aspects related to this field, in line with the National Strategy for the Prevention of Drugs and Psychotropic Substances for the period 2025-2029. This strategy aims to promote a comprehensive vision based on prevention, treatment, and the strengthening of deterrent mechanisms.
The study day is part of institutional efforts aimed at supporting and strengthening the national drug prevention system. It embodies a clear desire to adopt an integrated approach based on cooperation and coordination between the various sectors concerned, within a vision based on prevention, care, and protection. Discussions centered on the importance of collaborative efforts between law enforcement, healthcare providers, and community organizations to effectively combat drug abuse and addiction.
Participants emphasized the need for increased awareness campaigns targeting vulnerable populations, particularly youth, to educate them about the dangers of drug use. Furthermore, the forum addressed the challenges of drug trafficking and the importance of strengthening border security to prevent the entry of illicit substances into the country.
The organizers hope that this forum will contribute to the development of more effective strategies for drug prevention and treatment in Algeria, ultimately protecting individuals and communities from the devastating effects of drug abuse.
