RABAT – Moroccan human rights organizations and political groups have voiced strong condemnation of what they describe as a sustained campaign of intimidation and repression targeting voices critical of corruption and the country’s socio-economic realities. They are calling for the release of detainees and an end to infringements on fundamental freedoms.
The Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH), in a statement, expressed its rejection of all forms of censorship and suppression of journalistic expression. The AMDH denounced what it sees as attempts to silence journalists through illegitimate means, referencing leaked recordings that allegedly reveal a plot to discredit journalist Hamid El Mahdaoui. The association further criticized government interference in bodies tasked with upholding judicial security and justice.
The AMDH affirmed its readiness to participate in initiatives aimed at defending freedom of opinion, expression, publication, and access to information, in accordance with international human rights standards.
The Moroccan Human Rights Space also issued a statement expressing solidarity with journalists facing increasing pressure and restrictions that hinder their ability to perform their duties freely. They emphasized the importance of press freedom as guaranteed by international conventions.
A Moroccan youth movement, which recently staged large-scale protests, asserted that “day after day, the margins of freedom are shrinking in the country.” They stated that a “machine of intimidation, restriction, and repression continues to silence all voices denouncing the scale of corruption and imbalances,” citing the arrest of thousands of young people, bloggers, and journalists since the start of the protests. The movement expressed concern over the increasing restrictions on freedom of expression and creativity, condemning attempts to suppress dissenting opinions and silence those who speak out against injustice. They demanded the release of detainees and respect for their fundamental right to freedom of expression.
