President Tebboune Stresses Pharmaceutical Independence for Africa

Algiers – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune today underscored the critical need to bolster Africa’s pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities to secure the continent’s health security. He emphasized the importance of localizing drug production to reduce reliance on external sources and ensure a stable supply of essential medicines.

Speaking from the Presidential Palace, President Tebboune stated, “True sovereignty requires self-sufficiency, especially in sectors as vital as healthcare. Africa possesses the resources and the talent to develop a robust pharmaceutical industry that meets the needs of its people.”

The President highlighted the vulnerabilities exposed by recent global events, which underscored the dangers of dependence on foreign suppliers for critical medications and vaccines. He argued that investing in local manufacturing not only strengthens health security but also creates jobs, stimulates economic growth, and fosters innovation across the continent.

“We must prioritize the transfer of technology and expertise to African nations, enabling them to produce high-quality, affordable medicines,” President Tebboune asserted. “This requires collaboration between governments, the private sector, and research institutions to create an enabling environment for pharmaceutical innovation and production.”

The President’s remarks come amid growing efforts to promote pharmaceutical manufacturing across Africa. Several initiatives are underway to build local capacity, attract investment, and harmonize regulatory standards to facilitate trade in pharmaceutical products within the continent. This push for self-reliance is seen as essential for achieving sustainable development and ensuring equitable access to healthcare for all Africans.DZWatch will continue to monitor developments in this important sector.
