Algiers – The Algerian national team, Les Fennecs, are reportedly considering adding a second friendly match to their pre-Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) preparations. This development comes as FIFA has confirmed an official international break starting December 8th, compelling European clubs to release their African players for national team duty.
Initially, Algeria’s football federation (FAF) planned for only one practice match at Sidi Moussa, given the anticipated late arrival of Europe-based professionals who constitute a significant portion of the squad. However, with the FIFA window commencing earlier than initially expected, allowing for the players’ presence well in advance of the tournament, the FAF may revise its strategy. The possibility of scheduling a more competitive friendly, or even two, is now under discussion.
While the December 8th date marks the official start of the FIFA break, the FAF and coach Vladimir Petkovic may grant certain players dispensation to join the squad slightly later, particularly those with club commitments immediately following that date. Ultimately, the decision rests with Petkovic, who has the authority to demand the presence of all players by the designated date.
In related news, Algerian international Adam Zorgane appears to have earned a recall to the national team. Zorgane has enjoyed a resurgence in form in recent weeks, highlighted by a standout performance for his club, Union Saint-Gilloise, in a Champions League match against Galatasaray. His contribution led to him being named man of the match by UEFA’s technical committee, a testament to his quality and impact.
Zorgane’s performance has garnered praise from Turkish media, who lauded his efforts in midfield and his overall value to the team. This timely return to form comes just days before the AFCON squad announcement, significantly boosting his chances of inclusion in the final selection. The player’s recent displays are a welcome development for both the player and the national team ahead of the continental showpiece.
