President Saied Condemns European Interference in Tunisia

Tunisian President Kais Saied has strongly condemned the European Parliament’s recent resolution calling for the release of detainees, labeling it a blatant interference in Tunisia’s internal affairs. The President issued directives to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon a foreign ambassador and a foreign representative accredited in Tunis to lodge a formal protest.

President Saied emphasized Tunisia’s firm rejection of any actions that infringe upon its sovereignty. He asserted that the country would not tolerate external meddling in its domestic matters, particularly concerning judicial decisions and internal political processes.

“Such resolutions constitute unacceptable interference and disregard for Tunisia’s sovereign right to manage its own affairs,” a statement from the President’s office conveyed. The statement further elaborated that Tunisia is committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring fair trials for all individuals, without external pressure or influence.

Following the President’s instructions, the Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs summoned the Dutch Ambassador, Josephine Frantzen, to formally communicate the country’s strong disapproval. During the meeting, the Minister reiterated Tunisia’s commitment to its international obligations while simultaneously safeguarding its national sovereignty and independence.

The move underscores the growing tension between Tunisia and some European entities over concerns about human rights and democratic freedoms. President Saied has consistently maintained that his government is committed to protecting these values while resisting what he perceives as undue external pressure.

This diplomatic maneuver signals a firm stance by Tunisia against what it views as unwarranted intervention in its internal affairs. The coming weeks will reveal how this diplomatic disagreement will unfold and its potential impact on Tunisia-European Union relations.
