Algeria Healthcare Expo: Deals Signed, Future Partnerships Forged

Algiers, Algeria – The Algeria Healthcare Exhibition concludes today, Saturday, in the capital with the anticipated signing of numerous contracts between Algerian operators and their African counterparts. This significant step coincides with the final day of the African Ministerial Conference on Local Pharmaceutical Production and Health Technologies.

The event, held under the high patronage of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, featured several working sessions on Thursday and Friday. Experts and key players actively participated in these sessions at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center, located west of Algiers.

Today’s program includes meetings between African ministers to explore avenues for collaboration in areas of mutual interest. Participating delegations will also undertake field visits to pharmaceutical production units in the capital, providing firsthand insights into Algeria’s capabilities.

The African Ministerial Conference on Local Pharmaceutical Production and Health Technologies culminated on Friday with the adoption of the Algiers Declaration. Participants endorsed this declaration, which serves as a common ground for strengthening the continent’s health sovereignty.

The Algiers Declaration aims to foster a unified approach to developing the African pharmaceutical industry and reducing dependence on imports. It extends to accelerating the development of active ingredients on a continental scale, improving pandemic response capabilities, and enhancing demand forecasting.

The “Algiers Declaration” is the result of two days of discussions between ministers of health, pharmaceutical industry representatives, and delegates from African and international organizations.

Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Wassim Kouideri, presented the text of the Algiers Declaration, which was adopted by 29 participating countries, including Algeria, South Africa, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Chad, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The “Algiers Declaration” comprises 13 collective commitments from the participating African nations and embodies a unified vision for achieving health security across the continent. These commitments include strengthening local and regional pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturing hubs across Africa, leveraging opportunities offered by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and encouraging sustainable public-private partnerships to increase investment in the pharmaceutical sector.
