Algiers, Algeria – The African Ministerial Conference on Local Pharmaceutical Production and Healthcare Technologies is currently underway in Algiers. The conference, held under the high patronage of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, focuses on fostering collaboration and strengthening the continent’s pharmaceutical capabilities.
The third and final day of the conference features meetings between African ministers to explore avenues for cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Participating delegations will also undertake field visits to pharmaceutical production facilities in the capital city.
The Algeria Healthcare Exhibition, organized in conjunction with the conference, continues to facilitate partnerships. Several contracts are expected to be signed between Algerian operators and their counterparts from other African nations.
Yesterday, participants adopted the “Algiers Declaration,” a shared framework for enhancing the continent’s health sovereignty. The declaration aims to unite efforts in developing the African pharmaceutical industry and reducing reliance on imports. It comprises 13 collective commitments from the 29 participating countries.
Through the “Algiers Declaration,” African nations expressed their appreciation for “Algeria’s role as a host country and for its progress in covering more than 82 percent of national pharmaceutical needs through local production.” This highlights Algeria’s advancements in building a robust domestic pharmaceutical sector.
The conference is organized by the Ministry of Pharmaceutical Industry and the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, under the theme: “Local Pharmaceutical Manufacturing for an Integrated and Strong Africa.” The event underscores the importance of intra-African collaboration for achieving pharmaceutical self-sufficiency and strengthening healthcare systems across the continent.
