The Arab Parliamentary Union (APU) has reiterated its unwavering support for the Palestinian people, urging the international community to take decisive action to address the ongoing crisis. In a statement released on Saturday, coinciding with the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, APU President Ibrahim Boughali emphasized the centrality of the Palestinian cause to the Arab nation.
Boughali, also the Speaker of the Algerian People’s National Assembly, affirmed the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent, sovereign state with Jerusalem as its capital. The APU stressed the critical need for full adherence to the recent ceasefire agreement reached in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
The statement called for compelling Israel to immediately cease all violations and transgressions, ensuring the protection of Palestinian civilians and the unhindered flow of humanitarian aid. The APU urged national, regional, and international parliaments to intensify their political and legal efforts in support of the Palestinian cause.
These efforts should include full recognition of the State of Palestine, the adoption of legislation and policies criminalizing settlements and apartheid, and enhanced accountability for Israeli leaders before relevant international bodies, the statement noted. The APU also emphasized the importance of supporting initiatives aimed at providing international protection for the Palestinian people in the face of aggression and displacement.
The APU lauded the steadfastness of the Palestinian people on their land and their legitimate struggle for freedom and independence. It also praised the popular and human rights movements worldwide that contribute to exposing Israeli practices, advocating for justice and peace, and empowering the Palestinian people to realize their national rights.
The Union affirmed its commitment to continuing its vigorous efforts in regional and international parliamentary forums, coordinating with Arab, Islamic, and international institutions to hold the international community, particularly the United Nations, accountable for its legal and moral responsibilities. This includes ensuring an end to the occupation and the realization of a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.
