Derrbal: Modern Tech Crucial for Climate Change Adaptation

Algiers, November 29, 2025 – Minister of Water Resources, Taha Derrbal, has emphasized the critical need to embrace modern approaches and leverage advanced technologies to adapt to the escalating challenges posed by climate change, particularly concerning flood management.

Speaking at a workshop dedicated to flood prevention within the framework of climate change adaptation strategies in Algeria, Minister Derrbal outlined the Ministry’s comprehensive action plan, built upon two primary pillars.

Derrbal elaborated that the plan encompasses both an organizational component, centered around establishing a robust and all-encompassing legal framework, and a practical dimension focusing on the implementation of tangible field projects designed to mitigate flood risks.

“This strategy specifically targets the most vulnerable locations across the country,” Derrbal stated. “We have identified 865 sites with varying degrees of risk, allowing us to prioritize intervention and resource allocation effectively.”

Furthermore, the Minister revealed the development of localized flood prevention plans. “These plans include 16 local initiatives covering several provinces, with 14 currently under development. Additionally, 12 projects are underway to provide protection for nine key cities,” he explained.

The government hopes that these combined efforts will significantly improve Algeria’s resilience to the growing threat of climate change and ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.
