Israel’s Disregard: Is a New War with Hezbollah Looming?

As the Israeli military expands its operations in Lebanon, Hezbollah continues to demand the government fulfill its responsibilities, threatening retaliatory measures. Political analysts are divided on the group’s capacity to execute these threats. Despite the supposed ceasefire agreement, Israel has repeatedly threatened further incursions unless Beirut disarms Hezbollah – a demand the organization has consistently rejected.

Hezbollah’s Secretary-General, Naim Qassem, has affirmed the group is actively rebuilding its capabilities to defend Lebanon. While Hezbollah has shown no immediate response to ongoing Israeli strikes, including the alleged assassination of its chief of staff, Haitham al-Tabtabai, last week, some argue the group is prepared for a new Israeli war.

However, claims of preparedness have not deterred Israel from signaling its intent to escalate military operations in Lebanon if the government fails to disarm Hezbollah within the stipulated timeframe. According to Israel’s Channel 13, the military has presented a plan to broaden military actions against Hezbollah following the deadline set by Washington for disarmament.

The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation reports that Israel has informed the Lebanese government of its intention to expand attacks into previously untouched areas, a consequence of diminishing American pressure. Ali Fadlallah, a professor of political science and international law, believes Hezbollah is prepared to decisively repel potential attacks without engaging in open warfare.

Fadlallah, speaking on the program “Course of Events,” suggests that the Lebanese army’s clearing of weapons and rocket platforms south of the Litani River has “tempted Israel to encroach into this area.” He maintains that Hezbollah’s arsenal remains intact and ready to defend Lebanon. Fadlallah concludes that Israel’s threats of a new war imply that its previous military campaigns failed to achieve their objectives.
