The Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has announced significant changes to its national team, including the dismissal of head coach Marc Brys and the exclusion of goalkeeper Andre Onana from the squad participating in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
David Pagou has been appointed as the new head coach, replacing the Belgian Brys. The decision comes after Cameroon’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Onana, currently on loan to Turkish side Trabzonspor from Manchester United, is a notable omission from the squad. Veteran striker Vincent Aboubakar, a mainstay of the Indomitable Lions for the past 15 years, has also been excluded.
The new squad includes winger Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and midfielder Carlos Baleba, who plays for Brighton & Hove Albion. FECAFOOT President Samuel Eto’o had repeatedly expressed his desire to terminate Brys’ contract. Brys, 63, was appointed in April 2024 by the Ministry of Sports. Eto’o succeeded in his dismissal following his re-election last week.
Eto’o decided to appoint national coach David Pagou, 56, who has experience in the Cameroonian domestic league. Cameroon will begin their tournament campaign against Gabon on December 24th, in a group that also includes defending champions Cote d’Ivoire and Mozambique.
The Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to take place between December 21st and January 18th.
