Meta Platforms, the American tech giant that owns social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, is planning to introduce a new ad-free service on Instagram for users in Europe. This service will come with a monthly subscription fee of 10 euros.

According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, Meta is currently in talks with the European data protection authorities regarding the possibility of launching a paid service on Instagram and Facebook within the European Union.

Users who opt for the monthly subscription won’t have to deal with targeted advertisements, while those who choose not to subscribe will continue to receive ads tailored to their personal preferences. This means that Meta will monitor their online activity to determine their preferences.

This proposal by Meta is in line with European regulations that could affect the ways personalized advertising is delivered to users of the American company’s platforms.

Meta has informed European officials that it plans to impose a 10 euro (approximately 10.53 dollars) monthly subscription fee on users of Instagram and Facebook who wish to avoid receiving ads on their accounts and access their accounts via computers. Additionally, a fee of around 6 euros will be applied to each connected extra account.

The subscription cost will be higher for users of Apple devices, as Apple will impose an additional fee.

It’s important to note that targeted advertising based on user characteristics is a significant source of revenue for internet service companies like Meta. They rely on user data to determine which ads appear on their accounts.
