Minimum Wage Increase to Benefit Key Algerian Groups

Algiers – Significant changes are on the horizon for Algeria’s workforce and unemployed population, following recent announcements regarding the minimum wage and unemployment benefits. DZWatch has learned that the government is actively working on refining the criteria for unemployment benefit renewals, partnering with various sectors, notably the Ministry of Vocational Training and Education, and the National Employment Agency.

The aim is to transform the unemployment allowance into a transitional phase towards stable employment by facilitating the acquisition of necessary skills. This initiative underscores the state’s commitment to social welfare.

According to Malik Ataïlia, Director-General of Employment and Integration at the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security, the decision to raise the minimum wage from 20,000 to 24,000 Algerian dinars is a direct reflection of the government’s social policy and President’s pledge to enhance citizens’ purchasing power.

“This increase will have a direct positive impact on purchasing power, benefiting both young people and public sector employees,” Ataïlia stated. The raise extends to various categories of employees within the public service, as well as leading to increased retirement pensions.

Ataïlia emphasized that these socially-driven decisions require the collaboration of all market participants, particularly businesses, to ensure fair pricing, allowing citizens to fully benefit from the wage increases.

Currently, 1.5 million individuals benefit from unemployment allowances, predominantly graduates from universities and vocational training centers, alongside unemployed individuals without qualifications. These beneficiaries will see a 3,000 dinar monthly increase, raising the allowance from 15,000 to 18,000 dinars, in line with presidential directives to support purchasing power and boost employability.

The government anticipates that these measures will have a tangible and positive effect on the lives of many Algerians.
