Algeria Urges African Unity Amidst Rising Instability

Algeria has strongly advocated for African solutions to African problems, emphasizing that this approach is not merely an aspiration but a strategic imperative in the face of escalating threats. This call for unity was a key takeaway from the 12th edition of the ‘Oran Process’ which concluded on Tuesday.

The nation’s concerns stem from a confluence of destabilizing factors: unconstitutional changes of government, the growing menace of terrorism, and persistent foreign interference. According to Algerian State Minister and Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, these elements are feeding off each other, creating a dangerous cycle of instability across the continent.

Attaf highlighted the alarming frequency of unconstitutional power grabs, noting that the African Union has recently been compelled to suspend the membership of two nations within a mere 42-day period. He also underscored the escalating threat of terrorism, particularly in the Sahel region, where terrorist groups have seized control of vast territories and established de facto rule.

Furthermore, Attaf lamented the pervasive influence of foreign actors in African conflicts, asserting that external powers have often become the key brokers, overshadowing the role of local stakeholders and undermining national sovereignty. “The keys to resolving and fueling conflicts are in the hands of foreign intruders, not the local parties, the owners of the land and the homeland, and the owners of sovereignty and decision-making,” he stated.

Algeria believes that this precarious situation necessitates a renewed focus on the African Union’s role in conflict prevention and resolution. Attaf praised the discussions held during the Oran Process, emphasizing the need for the AU to reposition itself as a central player in crisis management. He stressed that prioritizing African-led solutions is crucial to shielding the continent from the dangers of international polarization.

He also pointed out the importance of strengthening the relationship between the African Union’s Peace and Security Council and the African members of the UN Security Council. This issue was a major focus of discussions during the Oran Process. Attaf argued that while the African Union must improve its performance in addressing peace and security issues, the African members of the UN Security Council must also ensure that these efforts are reflected and amplified at the global level.

Attaf concluded by noting that Algeria’s experience, along with that of other African members of the UN Security Council, has underscored the importance of strengthening this cooperative link.
