Algiers, Algeria – Ethiopia has lauded the “Oran Process” as a significant mechanism for bolstering peace and security across the African continent. This endorsement came from Hirut Zemene Kassa, Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU) and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), during the 12th session of the High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa held in Algiers on Tuesday.
Ambassador Zemene Kassa emphasized that the Oran Process effectively links operational actions and phases with analytical perspectives, thereby addressing the specific needs of the continent. She highlighted the pivotal role of the AU’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) A3+ framework.
“The discussions have allowed for a deeper understanding of ideas, an assessment of challenges, and the identification of opportunities,” Zemene Kassa stated, particularly in the face of a weakening multilateral system, terrorism, violent extremism, and unconstitutional changes of government that plague Africa. She added that participants had drawn essential lessons and defined logical and necessary actions to strengthen the work of the A3+ group and the AU Peace and Security Council.
The Ethiopian representative also acknowledged the value of the commitments made within this unique platform and praised the quality of contributions from the participants. “Ethiopia deeply appreciates the members of the AU Peace and Security Council, as well as Algeria, for its traditional hospitality and excellent organization of this seminar,” she stated, adding that Ethiopia will cherish exceptional and unforgettable memories of its time in Algeria.
The Oran Process, named after the Algerian city, aims to foster collaboration and coordination among African nations to address the root causes of conflict and promote sustainable peace. This endorsement from Ethiopia underscores the growing recognition of the Oran Process as a vital tool in Africa’s efforts to achieve lasting stability and security.
