Algiers – A representative from the People’s National Assembly (APN) participated in an Arab forum focused on safeguarding the elderly population from violence, abuse, and neglect. The forum, a dialogue amongst Arab parliaments, convened virtually on Wednesday.
Nasser Boudjeltia, President of the APN’s Committee on Health, Social Affairs, Labor, and Vocational Training, represented Algeria at the online event. His participation underscores Algeria’s commitment to addressing the critical issue of elder abuse within the broader Arab context.
The forum, organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), provided a platform for parliamentarians from across the region to share best practices, discuss legislative frameworks, and explore collaborative strategies for enhancing the protection of senior citizens.
Key discussions centered on identifying the root causes of violence and neglect against the elderly, strengthening legal protections, and promoting awareness campaigns to combat ageism and foster a culture of respect and care. Participants also explored the role of social services, healthcare providers, and community organizations in preventing and responding to instances of elder abuse.
The APN’s involvement in this forum reflects Algeria’s ongoing efforts to improve the well-being of its aging population. The Algerian government has implemented various initiatives aimed at providing social support, healthcare services, and economic security to senior citizens. This participation in the Arab forum further demonstrates a proactive approach to learning from regional experiences and contributing to a collective effort to protect the rights and dignity of older adults throughout the Arab world.
The insights gained from the forum will inform the APN’s future legislative work and policy development related to elderly care and protection within Algeria.
