Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – A landmark peace agreement has been signed today between the government of the Amhara region and the Amhara Popular Front (FANO), marking the end of years of tension and paving the way for stability. The agreement follows extensive negotiations mediated by the African Union (AU) and IGAD, with a pivotal role played by Algerian diplomat Salma Malika Hadadi, Deputy Chairperson of the AU Commission.
This historic agreement represents a crucial turning point, ending a prolonged period of unrest within the Amhara region and ushering in a new era of stability and trust-building in one of Ethiopia’s most sensitive areas. The move has been widely welcomed by various official and popular parties as a foundation for restoring calm and strengthening local security.
The signing ceremony was attended by IGAD Deputy Executive Secretary Moussa Ariso, representing the Executive Secretary, alongside Ambassador Salma Malika Hadadi, who has accompanied the negotiation process since its inception. Attendees praised the influential role of the African mediation, which helped overcome obstacles and unify the visions of the two parties.
In her address, Hadadi emphasized that the agreement represents an important milestone in supporting the path to stability in Ethiopia, noting that African diplomacy has once again demonstrated its ability to find effective peaceful solutions to conflicts within the continent.
The agreement is expected to launch a new phase within the Amhara region, including strengthening de-escalation, restoring basic services, and activating community reconciliation paths, allowing for overcoming the effects of the conflict and creating a more secure and stable environment for the region’s residents.
