Batna, Algeria – The Kia plant in Batna is poised to resume operations following a change in ownership and the submission of a preliminary license application, according to Minister of Industry Yahia Bouchri.
The Minister revealed the development in response to a parliamentary inquiry at the National People’s Assembly on Thursday. He stated that the application to restart manufacturing activities has been lodged under the new automotive industry framework. This framework prioritizes genuine local integration, mandates investor commitment to establishing a network of subcontractors prior to commencing production, and aims to transition from a previously limited assembly model to a sustainable industrial model.
The plant’s ownership has been transferred to Fondal, a subsidiary of the National Group (SNS). This transfer is part of a broader strategy to revitalize the automotive sector and ensure its long-term viability.
Minister Bouchri emphasized that the plant’s reopening will adhere to standards that guarantee the efficiency and competitiveness of Algeria’s mechanical industry. A key focus will be on developing the sector into a sustainable model that adds value to the national economy.
“The aim is to move beyond simple assembly and create a robust and integrated automotive industry,” Minister Bouchri stated. He further elaborated on the government’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to attracting investment and promoting technological advancement within the sector.
The resumption of operations at the Kia plant in Batna is expected to generate employment opportunities and contribute to the overall economic growth of the region. It also signals a renewed focus on developing a competitive and sustainable automotive industry in Algeria.
