Forces affiliated with the “Nation Shield” are expanding their presence in Yemen’s eastern governorates amid reports of deadly clashes. This development occurs as calls for autonomy grow within the Hadramaut region.
The “Nation Shield” forces, established by Presidential Leadership Council head Rashad al-Alimi, announced a phased deployment aimed at securing key infrastructure. This includes securing Al-Ghaydah International Airport in Al Mahrah governorate to ensure uninterrupted air traffic, standardizing security protocols, and establishing firm control over the Al-Aber/Al-Khasha’a and Al-Aber/Al-Wadia’a road networks in Hadramaut, implementing stringent measures to safeguard travelers.
Furthermore, the “Nation Shield” forces are taking over the 23rd Mechanized Brigade and its associated military installations in the Al-Aber district. The handover is reportedly proceeding smoothly and according to official procedures, designed to streamline the military posture in strategically vital areas. These forces were formed in January 2023 and report directly to al-Alimi as the Supreme Commander of the Yemeni Armed Forces.
Meanwhile, the Hadramaut Tribal Alliance announced the deaths of six of its members following clashes with forces loyal to the Southern Transitional Council (STC) within the Hadramaut governorate. The alliance stated its commitment to bolstering the security and stability of oil fields and facilities, defending them against what it described as encroaching militias.
DZWatch has learned that President al-Alimi has departed Aden for Saudi Arabia to hold consultations regarding the recent developments in the eastern governorates, particularly the situation in Hadramaut. Al-Alimi emphasized the state’s sole responsibility for protecting its institutions and preserving its sovereign decision-making power. He cautioned against unilateral actions that undermine the authority of the government and local administrations, urging adherence to the Saudi-brokered agreement and prioritizing the interests of the governorate.
Al-Alimi has also ordered the formation of a committee to investigate alleged human rights violations against citizens and property in the Wadi and Desert districts of Hadramaut. The situation remains fluid, and DZWatch will continue to provide updates as they become available.
