DZWatch Exclusive: Growing concerns are being raised regarding the safety and well-being of prominent Palestinian political figure Marwan Barghouti, currently incarcerated in an Israeli prison. Statements released by Palestinian advocacy groups allege a deliberate and escalating campaign targeting Barghouti’s life.
The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society has issued a stark warning, citing reports of severe mistreatment and potential threats against Barghouti. Amjad al-Najjar, Director General of the Prisoner’s Society, stated that this intensified pressure coincides with increasing international calls for Barghouti’s release, suggesting a calculated effort by the Israeli government to eliminate him while in custody.
Al-Najjar described the situation as a “complex crime and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law,” emphasizing that Barghouti’s life is now in “real danger” due to alleged punitive measures implemented by prison authorities against him and other Palestinian prisoners. He held Israel fully responsible for any harm that may befall him.
The Prisoner’s Society has urged the United Nations and the international community to intervene immediately, demanding an investigative committee be dispatched to visit Barghouti, assess his isolation conditions, and exert significant pressure for his release before it is too late. The organization further asserted that the systematic threats and attacks against Barghouti and other leading figures within the prisoner movement represent a “new chapter in a policy of slow killing and deliberate liquidation.”
Hamas-affiliated media outlets have echoed these concerns, stating that a genuine threat looms over Barghouti’s life. They claim that the reported assaults, isolation, denial of family visits, and overt threats constitute a “systematic escalation” indicative of a clear intention to target him. These sources also allege that the intimidation tactics directed at Barghouti’s family are part of a broader strategy to terrorize prisoners’ families and exert pressure on them.
These warnings follow reports that Barghouti’s family received a communication detailing information about his alleged mistreatment within the prison system. The situation remains tense, with calls for immediate international intervention to ensure Barghouti’s safety and well-being.
