The city of Babnusa in West Kordofan has been under siege for weeks, with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) tightening their grip. The United Nations has warned of a rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation, raising concerns that Babnusa could become another Al-Fashir, mirroring the dire circumstances unfolding in North Darfur.
According to a statement released by the Sudanese Army, the RSF is targeting Babnusa with artillery fire and strategic drone strikes. The army maintains that the city has not fallen, despite the ongoing assault.
Babnusa’s strategic location is crucial. Control of the city is a significant factor in determining the overall balance of power in the region, especially considering its population of approximately 300,000. Without access through Babnusa, the Sudanese Army faces significant challenges in reaching parts of Darfur and other areas within Kordofan. Its capture by the RSF would effectively sever vital supply lines for the army.
Conversely, securing Babnusa could pave the way for the RSF to advance towards Al-Abyad, a key city in North Kordofan. The outcome of the battle for Babnusa will undoubtedly have far-reaching consequences for the conflict and the humanitarian crisis in the region. DZWatch will continue to monitor this developing story.
