Algiers, November 6, 2025 – Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, and Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Dr. Mourad Adjal, jointly chaired a coordination meeting dedicated to monitoring the progress of lithium development in Algeria.
The meeting, attended by the Secretary of State in charge of Mines, Karima Bakir Tafer, and several senior officials from both ministries and their affiliated institutions, focused on practical ways to develop this promising sector. Lithium is considered a key element in the national energy transition and in strengthening Algeria’s industrial and technological sovereignty.
During the meeting, Minister Arkab presented a detailed overview of the progress of lithium mining exploration projects, particularly the results of field studies conducted in Tamanrasset and Ain Guezzam. These studies, conducted in collaboration with the Chinese group Ganfeng Lithium, have shown promising indications of the presence of this strategic resource and several other rare metals.
Discussions also covered the practical steps to implement the memorandum of understanding recently signed between the National Office for Geological and Mining Research (ORGM), representing the SONARAM group, and Professor Karim Zaghib, an international expert in lithium, iron, and phosphate (LFP) battery technologies. This agreement aims to develop the entire value chain of the lithium industry in Algeria.
Minister Adjal emphasized the importance of coordinating efforts and unifying visions between the relevant sectors to prepare a comprehensive national roadmap. This roadmap should integrate the upstream (exploration, extraction, and chemical transformation) and downstream (manufacturing, battery production, and energy storage) aspects of the industry.
The Minister highlighted the need to involve national skills and Algerian experts residing abroad in this process, along with industrial players, to build a solid scientific and industrial base. This would enable Algeria to position itself as a regional center for the production and development of lithium batteries. Both ministers stressed that the lithium sector is a strategic pillar for the new Algeria, as it is directly linked to the renewable energy, electric transport, and clean technology sectors. Its development is in line with the objectives of the national energy transition aimed at…
