Algeria Highlights Mine Clearance Expertise, Urges Treaty Expansion

Geneva, Switzerland – Algeria showcased its extensive experience in landmine clearance at the 22nd Meeting of the States Parties to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, held in Geneva from December 1st to 5th. The Algerian delegation presented a detailed account of the nation’s progress in demining operations, emphasizing the reliance on local expertise and technological capabilities that have yielded significant results on the ground.

The Algerian delegation reiterated the country’s unwavering commitment to the objectives of the Convention and its dedication to strengthening international efforts aimed at the complete eradication of landmines. The meeting, presided over by Japan, focused on assessing the implementation of the Siem Reap-Angkor Plan of Action for 2025-2029 and exploring avenues to broaden international adherence to the treaty.

Technical presentations from various delegations provided a framework for evaluating existing challenges and identifying more effective mechanisms for achieving universal adoption of the Convention. The Algerian representative highlighted the country’s achievements in landmine clearance and national programs dedicated to the healthcare and social well-being of landmine victims.

Algeria’s role in fostering international dialogue on this critical issue was also emphasized, particularly through the organization of the African Conference on Mine Action in Algiers on May 30th and 31st, 2023, in collaboration with the Convention’s Implementation Support Unit.

Furthermore, the Algerian initiative within the Human Rights Council concerning Resolution 58/22 on the “Impact of Anti-Personnel Mines on Human Rights,” unanimously adopted in April 2025, was highlighted. Complementary activities, including an exhibition in New York organized in coordination with the United Nations Mine Action Service, underscored the humanitarian dimension of disarmament efforts.

As the incoming chair of the Article 5 Committee of the Convention, Algeria outlined its priorities for 2026, encompassing both field operations and international coordination. The delegation also presented a report on awareness programs, demonstrating Algeria’s comprehensive approach to addressing the landmine issue.
